Employee resource groups are voluntary, employee-led groups whose aim is to foster a diverse, inclusive workplace aligned with the organizations they serve.
Being a part of employee resource groups at McKesson has not only fostered a grander sense of belonging at the company but has allowed for exponential growth in leadership skills which, in turn, is utilized in other areas of work. Here is a collection of work of some of the major accomplishments achieved while being on the OPEN (LGBTQ+) ERG National and Local Boards, as well as founding and launching the UNITY (Indigenous) ERG at McKesson.
The Uniting Native and Indigenous Tribes with You, or UNITY Employee Resource Group was founded in August of 2020 and formally launched in August of the following year. UNITY celebrates native and indigenous culture and embraces diversity by educating, connecting, and empowering McKesson employees through professional development and community outreach that builds cultural awareness. Creating a logo that embodies this statement along with representing all native and indigenous tribes was crucial to the foundation of the ERG.
The pieces of the logo represent:
• Eagle feathers: given only in honor, worn with dignity and pride
• Medicine wheel: can represent many things to many different people/tribes; embodies the four directions, the circle of life, dimensions of health, seasons of the year, spiritual animals, ceremonial plants, elements of nature, aspects of life, etc.
• The Native Sun: represents healing, peace, warmth, light and life
For UNITY’s first Native American Heritage Month in November of 2021, McKesson had the great honor of hosting Thomas H. Begay, WWII Navajo Code Talker. Planning and producing for the interview began at the beginning of 2021 with it all leading up to an on-site interview with Mr. Begay in August. After capturing almost two hours’ worth of content, the challenge then began with editing and producing a concise storyline that would fit into a digestible event. It was decided not to limit Mr. Begay’s story, but rather adjust the original hour-long event into two 45-minute-long events to allow users to hear his story in full. His story was met overwhelmingly with support and thank yous.

McKesson has been honored as a “Best Place to Work for LGBTQ+ Equality” for several years but the company has never converted its logo for Pride Month. The reasoning for this is that there is no red color option within the brand standards to utilize in order for it to fit within brand guidelines. Finding a solution in utilizing McKesson’s main brand colors along with a subbrand color palette that has been commonly used together for external materials, the McKesson Rainbow Logo was created to highlight the company’s inclusivity across its social media platforms. However, there was a lack of acceptance that required further push to prove this logo that took nearly two years and ultimately ended up at the CEO’s desk before it was approved to go live in 2020.
In celebration of National Coming Out Day, the OPEN ERG created a Coming Out video comprised of both LGBTQ+ community members, as well as allies, to share their stories expressing the importance of coming out. The message of the video: Coming out can be complicated and stress-inducing. It’s a unique journey for everyone. Here at McKesson, we want you to feel comfortable bringing your whole and authentic self to work each and every day. You’re not alone at McKesson.

For those of you who may not be aware, June is LGBTQ+ Pride month and several, if not all festivities were canceled in 2020 due to Covid-19. Wanting to still provide some joy and celebration to the company during this time, the OPEN ERG decided to turn things virtual by creating a Pride Miniseries; a series of four educational videos highlighting things within the LGBTQ+ community such as history, coming out, charity efforts and more. Founding volunteers from within the ERG who were willing to self-record at home, along with editing and producing the videos internally, OPEN ultimately created an expense-free resource for Pride month. The videos were well received by those within the company overall.

The OPEN ERG works to boost member engagement, community awareness, and overall enhance the workplace experience at McKesson. This brochure was created as an easy go-to informational pamphlet to be utilized at community events to educate those curious about working at McKesson and what they offer to employees, specifically their LGBTQ+ employees.
